The Insect Bioecology Laboratory is designed as an educational laboratory for conducting practical work and also a research laboratory that studies insects, both as plant pests and for other functions. This laboratory is one of the laboratories of the Department of Plant Protection, located on the second floor.

Facilities and Equipment

The Insect Bioecology Laboratory has facilities and equipment to support education, research, and community service activities, including:

• Practical and research rooms equipped with tables, chairs, cabinets, shelves, and whiteboards.
• Insect collection room equipped with cabinets, boxes, and insect pins.
• Incubator room equipped with incubators, refrigerators, and freezers.
• Sterilization room equipped with autoclaves, ovens, and hot plates.
• Microscope room equipped with optical microscopes, stereo microscopes, and digital microscopes.
• Computer room equipped with computers, printers, scanners, and internet.
• Laboratory equipment such as pH meters, analytical balances, digital scales, centrifuges, vortex mixers, pipettes, graduated cylinders, Erlenmeyer flasks, test tubes, and more.
• Field equipment such as insect nets, insect traps, magnifying glasses, tweezers, scissors, knives, labels, bottles, and more.

Activities

The Insect Bioecology Laboratory has conducted various activities in both education and research, including:

• Holding practical classes for the courses Fundamentals of Plant Protection, Integrated Pest Management, Postharvest Pests and Diseases, Pesticides and Their Application Techniques, Vertebrate Pests, Major Plant Pests, and General Entomology for undergraduate students in the Plant Protection Study Program.
• Held a practical course on the Basics of Plant Protection for undergraduate students in the Agroecotechnology, Soil Science, and Agribusiness study programs.
• Held a practical course on the Insect Taxonomy, Insect Morphology and Physiology, and Insect Ecology for postgraduate students in the Plant Protection study program.
• Held various training courses, such as the use of reference manager software and literature searches for students in the Plant Protection study program.

The Insect Bioecology Laboratory is also open to community service activities, such as:

• Insect identification training for high school and vocational school teachers throughout West Sumatra.
• Integrated pest management training for farmers throughout West Sumatra.
• Insect exhibition for the general public.
• Scientific paper competition on insects for university students throughout Indonesia.
• National seminar on insect bioecology and integrated pest management.
• International workshop on insect bioecology and integrated pest management.
