Seminar on Quarantine Pest and Disease Monitoring Results in West Sumatra 2026, with the Department of Plant Protection, Universitas Andalas

Padang, 2 November 2026 — Dr. My Syahrawati, S.P., M.Si., a faculty member of the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Andalas, served as a speaker at the Local Seminar on the Results of Quarantine Pest Surveillance for Fiscal Year 2026. The event was organized by the West Sumatra Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Office at its premises on Jalan Sutan Syahrir No. 267, Mata Air, Padang, on Monday, 2 November.
In her presentation, titled “Quarantine Pests in West Sumatra in 2026: Identification and Management,” Dr. My Syahrawati discussed the characteristics, biology, ecology, host plants, and management approaches for organisms of concern identified through surveillance in West Sumatra. The presentation focused on three quarantine pest species reported this year: one classified as A1, Group 2; one as A2, Group 2; and one as A2, Group 1. She emphasized the importance of accurate identification and laboratory confirmation as the basis for determining appropriate responses. Knowledge of pest biology, pathways of spread, and host plants is essential for follow-up surveys, distribution mapping, and preventing spread to pest-free areas.
The management approaches discussed included sanitation, mechanical control, crop environment management, the use of natural enemies and biological control agents, and the judicious use of pesticides in accordance with applicable requirements. In her recommendations, Dr. My Syahrawati highlighted the need for coordination among quarantine authorities, local governments, relevant agencies, universities, and farmers. Such coordination supports official communication, the development of technical guidelines for identification and reporting, the tracing of planting material sources and distribution, and the monitoring of management outcomes.
The participation of a Department of Plant Protection faculty member in this event reflects Universitas Andalas’s contribution of scientific expertise to crop protection in West Sumatra. By bringing together surveillance findings and scientific knowledge, the seminar is expected to strengthen early detection and coordinated, sustainable management of quarantine pests.
Let’s protect plants together!
